Leicester-China Solidarity Centenary Scholarship
Overview
At Leicester, we have a long established friendship and partnerships with Chinese institutions and organisations. Every year, we welcome Chinese students to study with us. China was the first country to have the Covid-19 outbreak and Chinese economy has been significantly impacted over this year. We believe that it is important to reach out and offer our support to prospective Chinese students and their families based in China during this challenging time.
These eleven scholarships are available to self-funded Chinese students from mainland China who:
- Were key workers during the COVID-19 outbreaks in China.
- Have achieved excellent grades or equivalent
- Receive and accept an offer to study on any one-year, campus-based postgraduate taught degree at the University of Leicester starting in September 2021.
£5,000 Scholarship (ten available)
Eligibility
You must have...
- Firmly accepted the offer of a place at the University of Leicester, and
- Paid your £2,000 tuition fee deposit
Extra requirement
You must submit a written statement (maximum: 500-600 words) explaining the reason for your application, and other evidence of your time as a key worker during the COVID-19 outbreak in China.
Full Fee Waiver (one available)
Eligibility
You must have...
- Firmly accepted the offer of a place at the University of Leicester, and
- Paid your £2,000 tuition fee deposit, and
- Achieved at least 85% from a top 200 Chinese university, and
- Achieved IELTS 7.0 overall or equivalent
Extra requirement
You must submit a written statement (maximum: 500-600 words) explaining the reason for your application, and other evidence of your time as a key worker during the COVID-19 outbreak in China.
You must also submit a short video in which you explain how you would use this scholarship to become an influencer to change the world. This video can be created using any suitable social media platforms, such as Wechat, Weibo, Bilibili, Red Book, TikTok China, Youku, Yizhibo etc. Please include the University’s title in Chinese (英国莱斯特大学) into your video title or message on any social media platforms.
Terms and Conditions
- You must be classified as an international student (non-EU) for fee purposes.
- You must be starting a one-year, full-time, campus-based postgraduate taught course commencing in September 2021.
- In accordance with scholarship guidelines, you are allowed to hold only one University of Leicester scholarship, awarded either centrally or by a department. If you are awarded more than one scholarship, you will only receive the higher value award.
- You cannot combine this scholarship with a full scholarship (for tuition fees and living costs) from any other source. You must inform us of any other scholarships or sponsorship currently held, or awarded at a later date. Our scholarship may be adjusted or withdrawn if other sources of funding have been awarded.
- If you have secured an award from a non-University of Leicester scholarship you will not be considered for this scheme.
- If you currently have a conditional offer of a place at the University, you will still need to fulfil any conditions stated on your offer letter.
- You must agree to promote your submission on social media by tagging the University’s Weibo and Wechat accounts and sharing them. We intend to share entries on the University of Leicester’s social media platforms. If
- you consent to have your video shared, please indicate this in your email.
You must agree that the University is eligible to use your submission materials at any marketing activities during the academic year 2021/22. - The deadline is 30 July 2021. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
- Successful candidates will be notified on 31 August 2021 and must register on their course by no later than 12 October 2021.
- The short video is only required if you applied for the Full Fee Waiver. Videos must be your own original work and not contain other users' footage or copyrighted material. We encourage you to share your entry on your own social media channels; we will share entries on the University’s official platform. Please do not use profanity or songs with explicit lyrics on your video. Although you can create and share as many videos as you like, we will only accept one formal entry via email per applicant – so make sure you choose your favourite to submit.
- The official submission period for the Full Fee Waiver will open on Sunday 14 February 2021, and will run for 100 days until 23:59 (GMT) on Tuesday 25 May 2021. Submissions can be received before this period but will only be considered if you have firmly accepted an offer (including paying your deposit) and you have a valid student ID.
