Entrance Scholarship Scheme for UG students - 2020
Overview
Summary
The University of Aberdeen offers a number of Entrance Scholarships of £1,000 - £3,000 per annum, (unless otherwise stated) to students who meet specific widening access criteria and/or who also demonstrate financial need, while they study for an undergraduate degree at the University.
Description
Entrance Scholarships available for undergraduate students commencing studies in September 2020:
(PLEASE NOTE: Applicants need only to complete the online application form once, and will then be put forward for all applicable awards noted below.)
Development Trust Scholarships (5 available)
Each scholarship is valued at £3,000 per annum. Preference will be given to students who have one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. (See attached guidelines for full details) These characteristics include (but are not limited to) being resident in target postcode areas, attending a target secondary school, having experience of being in care and being an unpaid carer. Financial need and academic potential will also be taken into account.
Prince of Wales Scholarships (15 available)
Each scholarship is valued at £2,000 per annum. Preference will be given to students who have one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. (See attached guidelines for full details). Financial need and academic potential will also be taken into account.
University of Aberdeen Alumnus Association Scholarship (1 available)
The scholarship is valued at £2,000 per annum. Preference will be given to students who have one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. (See attached guidelines for full details). Financial need and academic potential will also be taken into account. Preference will also be given to a student recruited from certain schools across Aberdeen and the wider area, as follows: St Machar Academy, Lochside Academy, Peterhead Academy, Portlethen Academy, Northfield Academy, Fraserburgh Academy, Bucksburn Academy, Arbroath Academy, Banff Academy, Brechin High School, Buckie High School and Elgin High School. In the event that there are no suitable applicants from these schools, the scholarship may be awarded to a student coming from a Scottish school).
Cormack Family Foundation Scholarships – Access Aberdeen - Business (2 available)
Each scholarship is valued at £4,000 per annum. Applicants must have accepted an offer to study on one of the University of Aberdeen Business School's degree programmes and preference will be given to a student recruited from certain schools across Aberdeen and the wider area, as follows: St Machar Academy, Lochside Academy, Peterhead Academy, Portlethen Academy, Northfield Academy, Fraserburgh Academy, Bucksburn Academy, Arbroath Academy, Banff Academy, Brechin High School, Buckie High School and Elgin High School. In the event that there are no suitable applicants from these schools, the scholarship may be awarded to a student coming from a Scottish school). Preference will also be given to students who meet one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council (See attached guidelines for full details). Financial need and academic potential will also be taken into account. Additional funding of £4,000 may be available to carry out an additional international business specialisation year as part of the MBus degree programme (the MBus is a five year degree programme).
The Bill Fraser Scholarship (1 available)
The scholarship is valued at £1,875 per annum and will be awarded to a student commencing BSc Geology and Petroleum Geology. Preference will also be given to students who meet one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. (See attached guidelines for full details). Financial need and academic potential will also be taken into account.
The Fullerton Scholarship (1 available)
The scholarship is valued at £2,000 per annum for a student commencing a full time degree in Law (LLB). Preference will also be given to students who meet one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. To be eligible a student must have lived in Scotland for a minimum of 5 years immediately prior to their university studies and obtained their university entrance qualification through the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework.
The Robert Grant Memorial Trust Scholarship (1 available)
Founded by his sisters, Elizabeth and Anne, the Robert Grant Memorial Trust, remembers Mr Robert Grant, an agricultural graduate of the University in 1923. The scholarship is valued at £2,000 per annum and will be awarded to a student commencing one of the following degrees: BSc Plant and Soil Science or BSc Environmental Science. Preference will also be given to students who meet one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. (See attached guidelines for full details). Financial need and academic potential will also be taken into account. Applicants must have been born in the counties of Morayshire or Aberdeenshire.
Horn Family Scholarship (1 available)
The scholarship is valued at £1,000 per annum and will be awarded to a student from an Aberdeenshire Council Secondary School, with preference given to a student from Inverurie Academy or Kemnay Academy. Preference will also be given to students who have one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council (see attached guidelines for full details).
The Mackay Scholarship (1 available)
The scholarship is valued at £1,200 per annum and will be awarded to a student from Farr High School, Kinlochbervie High School, Thurso High School, Wick High School, Alness Academy, Dornoch Academy, Gairloch HS, Golspie HS, Ullapool HS, Nicolson Inst., Kirkwall Grammar School, Stromness Academy, Anderson HS, Brae HS, Castlebay School, Sgoil Lioncleit or Sir E Scott School. Preference will be given to students who have one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. Robert and Elizabeth Mitchell Law Scholarship (1 available)
The scholarship is valued at £2,000 per annum and will be awarded to a student commencing any Single Honours/Joint Honours or Major-Minor Law degree. Preference will be given to students who meet one (or multiple) of the priority Widening Participation characteristics as defined by Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. Academic merit, financial need, and personal characteristics will also be taken into account. In respect of personal characteristics, applicants should be able to demonstrate, through the personal statement section of their application, that: they are enthusiastic, highly motivated and determined to succeed academically and professionally; they have a strong commitment to self-development and take a pro-active and committed approach to their education; they possess good communication and interpersonal skills.
The WA Thompson Scholarship (1 available)
The scholarship is valued at £3,000 per annum and will be awarded to a student, residing in the north-east of Scotland, who can demonstrate both financial need, academic ability and/or meet one or more widening participation characteristics. Applicants should also demonstrate in the personal statement that they:
- Are enthusiastic, highly motivated and determined to succeed academically and professionally.
- Have a strong commitment to self-development and take a pro-active and committed approach to their education.
- Possess good communication and interpersonal skills.

Eligibility
Please note: You should note that only applicants domiciled in Scotland and classified as Home Fees are eligible to apply for an Entrance Scholarship.
To be considered for a scholarship you will need to have applied to the University of Aberdeen and received an offer for a place starting in September 2020. To be awarded a scholarship you must have firmly accepted an offer, either conditional or unconditional, of a place at the University. University of Aberdeen scholarships can only be held by students of the University - they cannot be transferred to other institutions.
Eligibility criteria are noted below under each named award and more extensively in the guidelines document.
Criteria
Scholarships are available for all full-time undergraduate areas of study, (MA, BSc, LLB, MSCi, MChem, MGeol, MEng, BEng, MBChB (Medicine), Bachelor of Divinity, Bachelor of Theology, MA Primary Education, BMus), but not the PGDE education programmes.
