Albukhary Scholarship
Overview
This scholarship has been made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Albukhary Foundation. This year York is offering tuition fee waivers to match the Foundation's generosity. The Albukhary Foundation has a deep commitment to creating opportunity and facilitating access to world-class education.
The scholarship amounts available vary based on individual financial need of the student. For the 2021/22 academic year the available awards are:
- One award of £75,000 over three years
- One award of £50,000 and four awards of £31,250 to help cover living costs and expenses, plus you will pay no tuition fees to the University for the duration of your three year degree.
Please note that if awarded an Albukhary scholarship you would not be able to take up a Be Exceptional or VC award.
Eligibility
Open to students from Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
You must also hold a conditional or unconditional offer for a full-time three year undergraduate course at York.
How to apply
Application deadline: Friday 30 April 2021, 11.59pm BST
You must apply online. As part of the application you will need to provide:
- a personal statement of no more than 500 words explaining why you would like to be considered for the scholarship
- information on your current financial situation, including your household income.
If your UCAS reference is not sufficient, you may be asked to provide an additional academic reference.

- any other sources of funding available to you, including any other scholarship applications you have submitted.
Terms and conditions
- You must be from one of the listed countries above. Proof of nationality will be requested when a scholarship is offered.
- If you accept an Albukhary Scholarship you must make the University of York your firm choice through UCAS. If you have made the University of York your insurance choice prior to the committee selection date we will not be able to consider you for the scholarship.
- Funds will be paid in two instalments each academic year. The amount will be agreed when the scholarship is awarded.
- Your scholarship will be renewed for each year of your course providing you satisfactorily progress through to the next year of study and you maintain your registration as a full-time student.
