St Andrews is committed to attracting the very best students, and to providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone in our community. The University is pleased to launch a new Sanctuary Scholarship, specifically designed to support undergraduate and postgraduate applicants who are seeking sanctuary in the UK.

The Sanctuary Scholarship is open to any applicant that has an official Home Office status as one of the following:

  • Asylum Seeker
  • Refugee
  • Humanitarian protection
  • Limited leave to remain
  • Discretionary leave to remain

Additional Criteria

To be eligible for  the Sanctuary Scholarship, applicants must have one of the following official statuses in the UK:

  • Asylum Seeker
  • Refugee
  • Humanitarian Protection
  • Limited leave to remain
  • Discretionary leave to remain

When reviewing scholarship applications, the selection panel will consider:

  • Academic merit and potential
  • The applicant’s demonstrated interest in the field of study
  • Financial need
  • The impact of the applicant’s forced migration status on their access to education

Asylum seekers will be assessed as Home (Scotland) fee status

Duration of award

Annually for the duration of the student's course

Value of award (per year)

Postgraduate Taught courses up to £22,000

Postgraduate Research up to £15,000

Tuition or maintenance award?

Flexible funding which can be allocated towards Tuition or Maintenance depending on Government/other funding provided

Number of awards available

Postgraduate Taught - up to 4

Postgraduate Research - up to 2

A funding application must be submitted before the deadline to be considered.

This scholarship is available for application through the Scholarships and Funding catalogue. Current students can access Scholarships and Funding through MySaint.

  • If you have applied for a Postgraduate Taught programme (e.g. MSc, MLitt, MRes, PG Certificate, PG Diploma, Conversion Diploma), you can apply for scholarships and funding by logging into My Application after you have applied for a course. You should wait until the next working day after submission before attempting to access My Application.
