Sappi Scholarship
Overview
The Sappi scholarship is open to entrant undergraduate applicants who hold South African nationality, are domiciled in South Africa and undertaking a four year undergraduate degree course, excluding Medicine, at the University of St Andrews. This scholarship is an award of £35,000 per academic year and will contribute towards tuition fees and maintenance including accommodation and travel costs incurred by the student. Preference is given to students studying International Relations, Management or Sustainable Development.
In order to be eligible, applicants must be able to articulate a need for support through a personal financial statement. Students should refer to the 'Eligibility and 'How to apply' section below for more information on household income.
Applicants must demonstrate a household income below £70,000 per annum.

- Only available to students entering first year of an undergraduate 4-year degree programme at St Andrews.
- The Selection Committee seeks applicants who fulfil the academic criteria stipulated for their selected course.
- Applicants will also be selected on the basis of financial need.
As part of the application you will be asked to upload the following documents:
Financial Statement: A written personal financial statement describing any history of financial need (such as free school meals/fees), your current financial circumstances (written context of declared household income), any changes to your income (known changes such as job loss), and how a scholarship will assist your learning.
This should include relevant information such as:
- Details of your personal financial situation
- Household members earning and those not earning income
- Any expected changes to this income after you start your intended course
- Whether you have been in receipt of any financial support such as benefits
- Any previous needs based scholarships/bursaries you have held
- Any extenuating circumstances such as carer, dependants, disability, refugee
- Where self-employed details of wages and drawings are required
- Any other information that will help us understand why you need funding
Household Income: Evidence of the income stated in your scholarship application as “total household income”. Provide all relevant forms of income for the current or most recent full year: employment/wage/salary statements (most recent three months), tax certificates or returns, confirmation letters from department of work and pensions, letters from local government, FAFSA, Council Tax statement, Tax credits, PIP, DLA, dividends, pension, annuity, where evidence is not available please provide bank statements/E-statements (most recent three months) to show receipt of income. Preferably pdf or similar small file size format and in English.

After applying for your chosen course beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year, you must allow at least two working days for processing and issue of your log in details before you can apply for this scholarship.
