Value of award

The studentship will cover PhD fees at the Home/EU rate and an annual level of subsistence (living costs) equal to that provided by ESRC scholarships (estimated rate of £15,285 in 2020/21).

The holder of the studentship may have the opportunity to undertake a small amount of teaching within the School. Payment for this will be at a standard hourly rate in addition to the annual studentship.

Newcastle University Business School invites applications for a three year PhD studentship for a full time student to undertake a PhD in economics or economic history, starting their studies in September 2020. The School has a Research Community in economics and particularly welcomes applications that are aligned with one or more of its key research themes:

  • Applied time series econometrics
  • Behavioural and experimental economics
  • Economics of safety, health, environment and risk
  • Finance, financial economics and financial econometrics
  • Labour, health and education economics
  • Macroeconomics, policies and institutions in open economic systems
  • Spatial, urban, regional, international and industrial economics

The School is also keen to encourage research with links to its Future of Work strategic research theme. This theme is defined broadly in the interest of inclusivity and interdisciplinary outreach and includes, but is not limited to, issues such as:

  • The impact of broad social, economic and political phenomena such as ageing, globalisation, and migration on business and the economy at international, national and regional level;
  • How technological progress manifested by phenomena such as big data, analytics, digital, robotics and automation, machine learning etc. impacts on the future of business and economics?
  • How current and future equality, diversity and sustainability initiatives will be shaping social and economic policy initiatives and outcomes to enhance fairness and justice


This scholarship is funded by a gift to the University by alumnus, Mr Peter Lomas.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should have a good Honours degree (first-class or upper-second-class Honours) in an area related to the proposed field of study. Additionally, you must already possess, or expect to receive by March 2020, a Master’s-level qualification, preferably at ‘distinction’ level in a relevant subject area.

The award is available to UK /EU and non-EU international candidates. If English is not your first language, you must have IELTS 7.0 (with minimum of 6.5 in the writing and 6.0 in all other sub-skills).

International students will have to pay a top-up in fees between the home rate and the international rate.

EU students will pay home fees for the 2020-21 academic year, whilst for the following years EU students may need to top up the fees between the home rate and the international rate, depending on the government’s post-Brexit arrangements.

You must apply through the University’s online postgraduate application system. 

All relevant fields should be completed, but fields marked with a red asterisk in the application portal must to be completed. The following information will help us to process your application. You will need to:

  • insert the programme code 8240F in the programme of study section
  • select ‘PhD Newcastle University Business School (full time) - Economics' as the programme of study
  • insert the studentship code LOMAS20 in the studentship/partnership reference field
  • submit a full and detailed CV, an outline research proposal of around 1,000 – 2,000 words, and a personal statement of around 500 words which sets out your reasons for applying
  • submit your degree transcripts and certificates, in addition to two letters of reference to support your academic credentials.
