Postgraduate Scholarship in Antiferroelectric Materials for Energy Storage

Academic year 2020

Overview

These studentships are awarded on a cotutelle basis with students receiving a dual award on successful completion of their studies. Funding is offered at the standard UK Research Councils' rate (currently £15,009; to cover living costs) and will additionally cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (currently £4,327 per annum). These scholarships are available to both UK and EU nationals. The University of Kent is committed to the principles of inclusivity and diversity.

A Cotutelle PhD studentship position shared between the Universities of Kent (UK) and Lille (France) is available in the Sciences.

With Global concerns focussed on climate change and limiting our carbon footprints it is important to develop new technologies capable of meeting our energy needs. Antiferroelectric materials are attractive for large-scale energy storage as the offer high power densities and fast charge/discharge rates which make them promising candidates for integration into pulsed power applications. This studentship looks to investigate novel antiferroelectric
materials with a view to designing novel materials for energy storage. The projects will involve materials synthesis and characterisation using a variety
of techniques including structural, electronic and energy storage properties. A strong crystal-chemistry aspect will be part of this work with rutile –based phases the primary target of this research. The successful candidates will be jointly based in the Materials for Energy and Electronic group in the School of Physical Sciences at the University of Kent's main campus in Canterbury and the Unité de Catalyse et Chimie du Solide de Lille, RNCNRS at the Université de Lille in Lille (France). The candidate will be expected to spend time at both sites working under the supervision of Dr. Donna Arnold (Kent) and Professor Olivier Mentré and Dr Angel Arevalo-Lopez (Lille).

This PhD Studentship is due to start September 2020

Contact: For further information or informal enquiries, please contact Dr Donna Arnold at [email protected].

"Last year, I reached out to SI-UK, Jaipur for my Master’s journey, and it has been an incredibly fulfilling and successful experience. From guiding me through the application process to assisting with letters of recommendation and statement of purpose, and even following up with universities, SI-UK provided comprehensive support at every step of the journey. They went the extra mile, assisting with admissions, fee processing, accommodation arrangements, visa guidance, and coordination on medical checkups. I firmly believe that my admission to the University of Birmingham wouldn't have been possible without SI-UK. I highly recommend SI-UK to anyone seeking admission to a UK or Ireland university."
