Dependents of PSW Postgrads Eligible to Work in the UK
The UK Government has confirmed that dependents of PSW postgraduates will be eligible to work in the UK with near full access to the UK labour market and can work at any skill levels. The clarity was provided in the latest immigration updates on international postgraduates who shall be eligible for the post study work permit starting summer 2021 under the New Graduate Route.
The UK government had announced in September last year that all undergraduate and postgraduate students in the UK shall be eligible for a 2-year PSW visa after completion of their studies allowing them access to the UK labour market and the permit to stay and look for work in the UK at any skill level. While the PSW permit in case of PhD students and STEM professionals was recently extended to upto 3-years.
The Graduate Route is expected to increase the UK’s attractiveness for international students looking to study at UK universities and continue to work there. The PSW will ensure that the UK higher education sector remains competitive at the international level and attract highly skilled professionals to work in the UK.
The Government also recently announced the launch of a new point-based immigration system for international immigrants looking to work in the UK. The point-based immigration system will award points for attributes such as skills, education, professional qualifications and shortage occupation to those applying for a permanent residence status in the UK. The Home Office also revealed its plans to remove the study time limit for students studying at the postgraduate level, all as part of the plan to make the graduate route more attractive for international students.
